Ronaldihno - or little Ronaldo,
made such a huge impact as a teenager that Paris Saint- Germain broke the world
record transfer fee for a teenager to bring him to the club. He is a regular
for Brazil and was one of their stars during the 2002 World Cup win. He scored
a freak goal against England and generally played well but was slightly overshadowed
by the other two R's, Ronaldo and Rivaldo He left PSG this summer to join
Barca after being courted by many of the biggest clubs in Europe, eventually choosing
the Catalan giants over English giants Manchester United. He made his international
debut v Latvia in June 1999. He joined PSG from Gremio for £3.6m, but suffered
from regular bouts of unprofessionalism and bad behaviour. He was indifferent
if he felt that the match wasn't a 'big' enough match for him, but during the
big games he was magnificent. Like any footballer these days he spent most
of his time in night clubs and strip joints, and complained regularly about coach
Luis Fernandes' tactics and man-management. He even threatened to quit the club
unless Fernandes was sacked. The night before a game with Lens he smuggled
a girl into his hotel room, Fernandes found out and decided to drop the wayward
star only to be over-ruled by the clubs directors. PSG lost the game 3-2 and PSG's
president went into the player's dressing room to congratulate Ronaldihno. Last
season he returned from the season's winter break 5 days late, claiming that he
had problems with his (in)famous teeth. He was fined a mere £1300 - though
Fernandes did drop him this time. At a press conference club president Laurent
Perpere informed the media that if he had to choose between player and coach he
would choose player. Perpere was sacked by the club owners at the end of the season.
Le Marca reported on July 6 that Ronaldihno was saying that his ambition
was to play for Real Madrid as soon as possible. On July 13 "Ronaldihno last night
revealed in an exclusive interview that he is ready to join Manchester United
'immediately.' The Brazilian superstar is expected to be unveiled at Old Trafford
on Tuesday and told us he has no doubts over where his future lies, saying "United
is what I want and I am ready to move immediately." On July 21 it was being reported
"I am thrilled to be here I've always dreamed of playing for Barcelona since I
was a small boy." |
