USA Outdoor champion; 2000 Olympic 4x100m relay gold medalist; 2001 World Championships
silver medalist; 1997 World Championships 100m bronze medalist; 4x100m relay gold
medalist at 1999 & 2001 World Championships; 2001 World Indoors 60m silver
medalist; 2002 Jesse Owens Award winner In setting the men's 100m world
record of 9.78 seconds on September 14 at the 2002 IAAF Grand Prix Final in Paris,
Montgomery secured the overall 2002 Grand Prix men's crown and a payday of $250,000.
He won $50,000 for winning the race, $100,000 for topping the Grand Prix point
standings and $100,000 for setting the world record…was presented with
the 2002 Jesse Owens Award for his breakthrough season…Montgomery also
had a terrific season in 2001, winning the 60m silver medal at the World Indoor
Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, before winning his first U.S. 100m title outdoors
in Eugene, Oregon. He equaled the (then) third-fastest 100m time in history on
July 13, 2001 in Oslo when he ran 9.84. "When I saw the time, I could just
not believe it," he said. "It was not a good race, it was fantastic.
But I felt confident in the heats and thought I could win." Montgomery ran
his 9.84 in a pair of shoes borrowed from training partner Marion Jones. "My
luggage didn't show up," he said. "I had to wear Marion's shoes. They're
the same size." Placed second at 2001 World Outdoors 100m in 9.85, nearly
nipping Maurice Greene at the wire, and ran anchor leg on U.S. 4x100m gold medal
team that included Mickey Grimes, Bernard Williams and Dennis Mitchell. Montgomery
ran in the first round of the 4x100m relay to earn a gold medal in the event at
the 2000 Olympic Games, and he is the 1997 World Championships bronze medalist
at 100m…says that training with Jones has brought more discipline to his
life and his training. He began training with Jones and then-coach Trevor Graham
in 1999 and began training harder, six days a week, with increased weight training…Montgomery
started as many of his fellow American athletes did, with baseball and football,
but an injury made him try track and field. He soon showed great talent and decided
to develop his sprinting potential. Tim set a world junior record in 1994 with
a time of 9.96 seconds, but it was later not ratified because the track was 3.7
centimeters too short. 2004: 1st at Martinique (10.08)…6th at Nike
